El Sol Jupiter’s Neighborhood Resource Center runs a legal program that requires the support of a legal assistant. He/she will help the Legal Coordinator who is a Volunteer lawyer with the case proceedings, and thereby will reduce his/her workload.
The general description of the duties and responsibilities for the legal assistant is:
Educational Requirements
Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies or Bachelor’s degree in other related fields with the willingness to start a career as legal assistant. The successful candidate will have certain skills, which include basic computer capability (knowledge of computerized legal research, MS Word and Excel); good or great organizational ability; knowledge of the fundamentals subjects of law with special attention to immigration law and labor law, good analytical skills, good communication skills, good clerical skills. The legal assistant must be completely bi-lingual in English and Spanish. Must have driver’s license. Finally, the legal assistant must be patient and compassionate.
Job Duties
The legal assistant will assist a lawyer in providing legal services to the clients of El Sol. He or she will assist in doing client intakes, will be familiar with our lawyer referral list, will keep office files organized, will assist in organizing Know Your Rights and other legal trainings, will be familiar with the immigration legal system, will assist in guiding clients through the legal system, and may help prepare appropriate materials to assist clients who need to be involved in the legal system.
A legal assistant is not allowed to provide legal advice to clients. The legal assistant also will be responsible to prepare annual and quarterly reports for the El Sol annual report.
Work schedule: The position is funded for ten hours per week, including at least one Saturday per month, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The other hours will be set between the legal assistant and the supervising attorney, but shall be during the hours that El Sol is open to the workers.
Payment per hour: $ 15.00 per hour
