Matt is a graduate student at the University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies. This summer, he is contributing as a labor program volunteer at El Sol’s employer desk, but he is also using the center as a base for important research.
He is studying how Venezuelan and Guatemalan immigrants use mobile phone technology to stay connected.
Before enrolling in his master’s degree program at the University of Florida, Matt worked in Texas and Costa Rica as a journalist. “I became interested in the connection between Latin America and the expanding digital world,” he said.
“El Sol, as a pillar of the immigrant community in South Florida, provides an ideal structure to understand and engage with immigration issues. I’m thrilled to spend the summer here volunteering at El Sol and getting to know the local community.”
Matt is currently conducting surveys. If you would like to contribute to his research and share with him how you use mobile technology to stay connected, email us at contactus@friendsofelsol.org
