She currently owns and runs an accounting software consulting company- Pizon Computer Consulting, Inc.

Her line of work is supporting accounting software such as QuickBooks which El Sol uses. She originally came to El Sol as a hired consultant to set up the accounting software; a quick observation told her that since she would be needed more often than originally planned. At first she was coming in weekly; now she comes in quarterly to help with the bookkeeping and accounting.

Eve followed El Sol’s early beginnings in the newspapers. She thought it was a great idea and knew that the town of Jupiter and the residents of Jupiter would benefit greatly from having such a center. She believes that El Sol does a great service to the community, and she is grateful to be a part of it.

Jocelyn Skolnik, El Sol director says: “After providing consulting services for El Sol, Eve stayed on as a volunteer to help us strengthen and continue improving our financial reporting. Her expertise using QuickBooks has been very valuable to El Sol. With her help we have become more organized with out bookkeeping, and that has helped us ensure we are the best stewards of the funds we receive to make a positive impact in our community.”

El Sol treasurer Sheila Hirsch has this to say about Eve: “Eve has been an ‘accounting angel’ to El Sol. Despite the demands of operating her own business, Eve has never said ‘no’ to us. No time is too much, no distance too far to travel in order to lend us her expert assistance and guidance. We greatly appreciate Eve’s efforts.

Eve’s parents live in Port St. Lucie. They are both fine artists so she’s been fortunate to have grown up around beautiful art. her comment about being an accountant in the midst of fine artists: “It’s funny that I went into accounting and software- I guess that’s the rebel in me!”

“He is a dedicated worker and has participated in numerous vocational training workshops and community service projects” said Labor Coordinator Wilberto Luna. A native of Guatemala, Mateo, 31, was elected president of the Workers Council last year, succeeding Diego Rojas.

His interest in learning new job skills is from personal experience, and as head of the Workers Council motivated him to set a goal of ensuring that workers receive more training in various job skills. In Guatemala, he worked as an accountant, but after coming to the U.S. he has been self-employed at times doing painting and flooring.

He was among workers who participated in the just completed hands-on training that gave El Sol’s assembly hall a new coat of paint.

When not working, Mateo can be found at El Sol taking whatever vocational and other classes are available. For recreation, he loves to play soccer. Congratulations to Genaro Mateo for his well-deserved honor as El Sol’s Featured Worker for April/May!

El Sol is launching a greatly expanded health outreach and education program thanks to a $100,000 grant from Quantum Foundation, a West Palm Beach based grant making organization.

The two-year “Health Promoter” grant will fund the training of lay health advocates who will be responsible for educating people in their community about various health topics such as diabetes, which is the focus of the initial phase of the outreach program. “We all know diabetes is a big problem that affects one out of ten people nationally, and four out of ten people among our clients,” said El Sol Center Director Jocelyn Skolnik. Other issues the health promoters will handle include nutrition, health issues in the work place, domestic violence, and addiction.

El Sol is partnering with the Rural Women’s Health Project in Gainesville, which will train the health promoters and oversee the project. The goal of each volunteer will be to teach 10 others about the health topic of the month, expanding El Sol’s outreach efforts, which in the past has been limited to bringing health experts to talk with the workers at El Sol.

“We greatly appreciate Quantum Foundation’s grant because it will allow us to educate many more people about vital health issues than we’re currently able to reach,” Skolnik said. By the end of the two-year grant, she estimates the program will have reached 1,560 people in the community who cannot be reached by more traditional communication methods.

Quantum Foundation President Kerry Diaz said, “We’re excited to support this kind of innovative project that aligns so well with our mission to create a healthier Palm Beach County. We know that lay health workers provide a trusted bridge between the community and service providers, resulting in enhanced access to quality health care for all.”

The Quantum Foundation, a private grant-making organization, awards grants to approved charities and certain governmental entities serving Palm Beach County. The Foundation is the largest Palm Beach County-based health funder with 100% of grant dollars staying in the county, according to the Florida Philanthropic Network (FPN).

They enjoyed a bountiful meal followed by entertainment that included a Christmas pageant and music. There were raffles of TV sets, computers and bicycles. In addition, everyone received a gift. Fifty-two volunteers were led by Alex Fuentes, and the Christmas committee consisting of Sr. Marta Tobon, El Sol Board member Jill Hanson and Diane Williams. The committee and volunteers served a delicious meal of ham, pork, turkey, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, tortillas, rice and beans, plus dessert and beverages. “This was triple the crowd we had at Thanksgiving,” said Fuentes. The overflow crowd resulted in some dinners being served in an upstairs classroom and several dozen children eating outside on the lawn, but no one minded. It was a beautiful day and everyone was having a good time. Volunteers served some 440 meals. It was Fuentes’ fifth year of supervising the Christmas dinner. He also oversaw the past six Thanksgiving celebrations.

El Sol board member Sister Marta Tobon, of the Hispanic Ministry at St. Peter Catholic Church, served as mistress of ceremonies and said it was wonderful to see the crowd having such a great time. “It was like one big family celebration; everyone was excited and grateful,” she said. The hard work of volunteers, coupled with donations by numerous individuals, organizations and businesses helped make the Christmas party possible.

When he is not working or volunteering, Eddy enjoys playing basketball and reading. He has a wide variety of other interests and skills as reflected in his idea of his dream job which would include a general contractor, a pilot, psychologist, or a tattoo artist.
El Sol Labor Coordinator Wilberto Luna praised Lopez as an excellent worker whose positive outlook and willingness to help others make him an excellent role model for others to emulate. Congratulations to Eddy Lopez and his welldeserved recognition as El Sol’s Featured Worker of the Month. The honor gives him priority for hiring for three days.

Alex Fuentes is well known El Sol’s Featured Worker to everyone who has visited El Sol on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day ~ the extraordinary spirit of giving that is being celebrated is due in large part to the skills and energy and love that flow from Alex as he oversees the preparation and serving of the holiday meals. It takesa minimum of 35 volunteers to successfully prepare and serve anywhere from 50 to 350 hungry people.Alex manages to collect volunteers like he collects turkeys and ham and all the trimmings ~ many of the volunteers sign up year after year not only because it does their heart good but because Alex makes them feel so good. Alex says:”I am indebted to El Sol for allowing me to do this work. El Sol’s work is done in the spirit of giving and I believe in this mission.” Alex was born in New York City and moved to Miami as a teenager. His family, originally from Ecuador, has been in the food business for many years. Alex and his family have represented national and multinational manufacturers such as Gatorade and Coca-Cola, have owned two Hispanic companies and have provided Hispanic food products for retail supermarkets throughout the country. They provided MRE tamales to personnel serving in the Iraq war and Desert Storm. His family originated the Breakfast Burrito for McDonald’s.

Alex moved to Jupiter from Miami in 2005 because Miami was too busy and Jupiter looked like a great place to live. When asked what brought him to El Sol, Alex said
his mother was like Mother Teresa ~ she did charity work 24/7, so it’s in his blood. A good friend introduced him to El Sol volunteer Tom Walsh. Tom told Alex about Jupiter’s newly opened resource center, El Sol, which turned out to be a perfect place for Alex to share his spirit and his skills.Alex coordinated El Sol’s first Thanksgiving Day celebration and has been coordinating this event ever since. He has begun overseeing the kitchen part of the Christmas Day celebration at El Sol as well. Both events take a tremendous amount of skill and coordination and strong contacts in the food community. Alex has all three and El Sol is grateful for
his service. Alex had five children, ages 14 to early 30s. His son,Alexander, died last April. Alex dedicates his service to ElSol in memory of his 19 year old son, Alexander Fuentes.
Thank you, Alex, for sharing your spirit of love and caring.

This popular annual festival returns Sunday, Nov. 4 featuring original paintings by Jupiter artists, a variety of crafts plus colorful necklaces, bracelets and embroidered bags made by women in a Guatemala mountain village.
The festival is from noon to 4 p.m. at the El Sol Center, 106 Military Trail. Admission is free. There will also be a raffle of a painting by Jupiter artist Pedro Chavajay.
The beautiful embroidered bags, necklaces and bracelets from Guatemala were produced by a Mayan women’s cooperative of talented artists and craft persons in the municipality of Conception Chiquirichapa in Guatemala’s western highlands.
Participants in El Sol’s sewing program will also be selling bags and other products they have created with sewing skills acquired through El Sol’s vocational training program. As in past years, the Lighthouse ArtCenter of Tequesta is co-sponsoring this year’s Art Fest. For more information call 561-746-3845
